Flint Water Crisis Case Against Ex-Governor of Michigan Has Been Officially Closed by Judge

By

On a day of considerable legal consequence in Michigan, a judge officially dismissed charges against the state's former Governor, Rick Snyder. In connection with the notorious Flint water scandal, the charges included offenses such as willful neglect of duty and are now extinguished according to the judge's directive.

Snyder Walks Free, Records to Be Destroyed

Following the news presentation, citizens across the state reacted with dismay and relief. This contentious decision further dictated that all police records related to Snyder be destroyed, indicating a total erasure of this scandalous chapter from the former governor's record.

The Crime Snyder Stood Accused Of

Snyder, who served as a Republican Governor until 2019, was entangled in legal battles of severe charges linked to his service. With his standing accused of committing willful neglect of duty, this was a historic scenario, as he was the first Michigan state governor to face such charges.

Judge's Orders and Reaction of Law Enforcement

Judge William Crawford's signed dismissal order mandated that all records tied to Snyder's detainment by police in 2021, encompassing fingerprints and booking photos, be abolished. Assistant Attorney General Chris Kessel also put his signature on the document, reinforcing its judicial standing.

The Last Appeal and Its Repercussions

Snyder was on the verge of being criminally prosecuted along with eight others. However, the cases came to a sudden halt when the state Supreme Court in 2022 declared that the attorney general's office's use of a one-judge grand jury was unjustified.

The Inception of the Flint Water Disaster

The city of Flint garnered national attention in 2014 as its water was found to be contaminated with lead. Snyder-appointed city managers switched the water source to the Flint River, a measure aimed at cost-cutting while constructing a pipeline to Lake Huron. Lead from ancient pipes leached into the water supply as it wasn't treated to reduce corrosion, poisoning it for over a year.

Future Attempts to Uncover the Truth

In October, the Attorney General's office asserted willingness to issue a report delineating its investigation of Snyder and other officials. Additionally, Snyder's legal team signaled their intention to publish an analysis.

Defense attorney Brian Lennon emphasized, "Then the people of Flint can quickly decide for themselves who lied to them and who is telling them the truth," suggesting hope in people's power to discern the reality of this protracted saga.
