NFL News: 49ers Make Surprising Decision, Hire Commentator John Lynch As GM

San Fransisco 49ers made a surprising decision to hire John Lynch as the general manager. The former defensive star of Denver Broncos and Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed the agreement on Sunday, Jan. 28.

Prior to the appointment, Lynch is known as color commentator in "NFL on Fox" for nine years. According to the NF, he signed a six-year contract with the 49ers.

Lynch has never been holding any single managerial position in the NFL team before after his retired in 2008. The appointment is a substantial surprise, according to USA Today. However, he has one advantage with his experience as color commentator for nine years which enable him to have the big picture of NFL team management.

However, seeing and observing is much different than implementing. His appointment brings back the memory of Matt Millen, who was appointed CEO and general manager for Detroit Lions in 2001. Millen was a commentator for Fox and ESPN since 1991 after ending his 11 years of career as a player.

Under Millen's leadership, the Lions suffered its worst seasons. During his first tenure, Detroit Lions had never won any road game for three consecutive years. One of his failures was a continuous bad draft decision.

Fans of the 49ers fear that Lynch may be the second case of Millen. It is because of the similar trait between the two of them. Both are excellent players who had won Super Bowl, a Pro-Bowl selection and they both are also a very good commentator.

Lynch was selected Pro-Bowl nine-time during his fifteen years of playing career. He was drafted by Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1993 NFL Draft and playing for 11 seasons in Florida before Buccaneers waived him in 2003 after winning the Super Bowl XXXVII. He signed with Denver Broncos in 2004 and played there until 2008.
