2017 Oscar Nominations: Tom Hanks, Amy Adams Wrongly Listed as Nominees; ‘La La Land’ Bags Whopping 14 Nods

By

The official website for the Oscars issued an apology for mistakenly including Tom Hanks and Amy Adams in this year’s nominations. Although the two did not bag 2017 Oscar nominations, they were mistakenly put in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories on the website.

Adams’ name was wrongly included in the list for her ‘Arrival’ performance while Ruth Negga, who actually earned a nomination for her ‘Loving’ performance, was left out. As for Hanks, the two-time Oscar winner was put in the category for his ‘Sully’ performance, making him the sixth nominee when there should only be five. The official 2017 Oscar nominees for Best Actor include Casey Affleck (‘Manchester by the Sea’), Denzel Washington (‘Fences’), Ryan Gosling (‘La La Land’), Andrew Garfield (‘Hacksaw Ridge’), and Viggo Mortensen (‘Captain Fantastic’).

ABC Digital, which listed the 2017 Oscar nominations on the official website, released a statement to make an apology for the erroneous announcement.

"This morning, in an attempt to release breaking news as announced, ABC Digital briefly posted inaccurate nomination information on the Oscar.com website," the statement reads. “The nominees announced by the Academy on Twitter were accurate. ABC quickly identified and corrected the errors. We apologize to the Academy, press and fans for any confusion."

This is not the first incident of a major awards show making a mistake in announcing nominations. In broadcasting the 2016 Golden Globes nominations, the award show’s official Twitter account mistakenly referred to America Ferrer as Gina Rodriguez. Meanwhile, other 2017 Oscar nominations making the headlines is the musical ‘La La Land’ as it bagged an impressive total of 14 nods. The movie, starring Gosling and Emma Stone, are now at a tie with ‘Titanic’ and ‘All About Eve’ for having the highest number of nominations in Oscars history.

Moreover, the 2017 Oscar nominations was also met with a positive response after acknowledging six black actors- breaking another record once more- and placing racially diverse movies such as ‘Fences’ and ‘Hidden Figures’ in the Best Picture category.

“It makes me feel good to see such a multifaceted group of people get recognized,” ‘Moonlight’ helmer Barry Jenkins said, after his film raked in eight Oscar nominations. “It’s an affirmation that film has the power to erode barriers and reveal what makes us all human.”

Hosted by late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, the 89th Academy Awards is set to air on Feb. 26, 2017 on ABC.
