Netflix is the New Cable: Esquire Cable Network Announces Shutdown

They say that the only constant thing in this universe is change. That being said, a lot of people don't like to change. Some people just want to cling to the old ways, to remember how things used to be, to bring the world back to a time where things were memorable, easy to comprehend, nostalgic, one might say. But alas, things are constantly changing in this world, and that applies to almost everything including technology. With the shift and change in our media, long gone are the days where we would sit down and watch the news at night or where kids would wake up early to watch their Saturday morning cartoons. Those days are a thing of the past, and now such things are accessible in a much easier way: the internet.

With the change in media, there is always a change in the method of receiving information, and the same goes for cable television. Back then, many of us would have to follow a certain schedule every week and tune in at particular times to insure we did not miss any piece of information or entertainment. Now all this information can be viewed on the internet through youtube videos and other such ways, and the one that seems to be making the most money by this method happens to be Netflix. According to the Chicago Tribune, Esquire cable network announced that it would be shutting down, and while this happened Netflix had reported that it had reached its biggest and most profitable quarter ever, thus signifying that if this isn't a transition from one media format to another, then it would be hard to find a clearer example.

This, of course, was not the only time where Netflix was riding a train that seemingly had no brakes. In 2015, The Huffington Post reported that 40 percent of households in America that have a TV and/or broadband internet also had a subscription to a video-on-demand service like Netflix. Because of this, an increasing number of homes in the US have become only internet-only, deciding to do away with cable television altogether for the seemingly more rational and simpler method of services like Netflix. With Netflix being able to play on not just computers and TVs with a connection to the internet but also your portable devices such as smartphones and tablets, Netflix is making a killing with all of the sales its garnerings. Its easy-to-access ability is only sweetening the deal and may just be the new cable in today's society.
