Fans of the fantasy saga Game of Thrones could finally be able to find out what happens next as George R.R Martin - the author of A Song of Ice and Fire series which is the base of the Emmy Award winner TV show, teases his long-awaited book will be released this year.

Martin, 68, has delayed the release of his sixth book The Winds of Winter for almost 6 years and has left devotees wondering if he is ever going to finish the book.   Martin posts on his blog that he has made progress but still saying that it is not done yet.

"It is not done yet, but I've made progress. But not as much as I hope a year ago when I thought to be done by now," he wrote. He then continued "I think it will be out this year, but I thought the same thing last year"

Admitting there was "a lot still left to write", Martin said last year that he had fallen behind and would not be able to meet the deadline set by his publishers. A Dance with Dragons, the fifth book of the series was released in 2011. The book series is planned to have 7 books, with another book "A Dream of Spring" which will be the last book of the series after the pending The Winds of Winter.

The TV show has caught up with the events in the books and fans have left curious on what will happen next, whether the HBO series will be having its own plot or will be following the yet to be published the book as their main source.

The new season of Game of Thrones is expected to air in spring 2017.

"We're starting a bit later because at the end of this season, 'Winter is here' - and that means that sunny weather doesn't really serve our purposes anymore," showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss confirmed.
