Japanese Teen Snowboarders Face Suspension After Using Weed

By

It's a disappointment for two Japanese snowboarder teenagers to be suspended and cannot compete with their beloved sport because of marijuana use. On Wednesday, the Ski Association of Japan banned them after discovering the use of marijuana on a December tour in the U.S.

The two teenagers were not named since they are only minors. One of them admitted that he tried smoking marijuana at a Colorado party where the said illegal plant is legal for recreational purposes provided you are 21years old.  The other teenager denied of doing so, as reported by abc News.

In addition to their punishment, their names were removed from the roll of Japanese Olympic Committee elite athletes, making their participation in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics unsure.

According to a report from The Japan Times, the tests found evidence of marijuana in the hair of the snowboarder. Takahiko Takayama who is the executive board member of Ski Association of Japan mentioned at a press conference that the association could not tell the possibility of the two athlete's participation in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Games in South Korea.

At a boarding meeting, the SAJ accepted Fumikazu Hagiwara's resignation. He is the head of the snowboarding committee and decided to step down to take accountability for the failed test.

"If they undergo rehabilitation, there is a chance for them (to compete in Pyeongchang)," said SAJ director Toshimasa Furukawa, noting that Japan's snowboarders have faced criticism at past Olympics for flouting team dress code. "But it is impossible to say now whether they have enough time."

Japanese athletes were given a warning of being kicked out of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics after snowboarder Kazuhiro  Kokubo arrived wearing dreadlocks with his uniform  in "hip hop" style where his trousers are pulled over his hips and shirt hanging out which caused indignity from cabinet-level lawmakers back home, based on the Ten Eyewitness News report.

The latest fuss comes after three Japanese badminton players which includes Olympic medal hopeful Kento Momota were kicked off the national team earlier this month when they visited an illegal casino.
