‘The Dark Tower’: Major female role to be played by Abbey Lee not in the books; Matthew McConaughey confirmed as Man in Black?

'The Dark Tower' is set to feature 'Mad Max' star Abbey Lee as an important female lead not mentioned in the original series of fantasy books by author Stephen King. She may join Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba should the two confirm their roles in the new film.

According to Uproxx, Lee will be joining McConaughey and Elba as a female lead named Tirana in the upcoming live-action adaptation of King's series of novels of the same name. The Australian supermodel-turned-actress appeared on George Miller's 'Mad Max: Fury Road' as the Dag, one of the Wives of the antagonistic Immortan Joe. She made her feature film debut in 2015 with 'Ruben Guthrie' and will is also set to appear on 'Gods of Egypt' as well as 'The Neon Demon'.

Her role in Nikolaj Arcel's 'The Dark Tower' is reportedly a key protagonist in the film. However, the original novels by Stephen King did not feature a main character named Tirana. It was speculated that Tirana may have been a minor character in the novels but was given a bigger role in the cinematic adaptation.

It was reported that Tirana will be serving the film's main antagonist, The Crimson King. According to Deadline, Lee's Tirana is a creature with fake human skin and snake-like eyes and she is also described as being sexy and dangerous.

However, fans of the original book series cast doubts over Lee's Tirana as the only mention of Tirana in King's eight novels was of a "low woman" in a vampire lounge, according to Blastr. It fueled speculation that the filmmakers may possibly change major aspects of the books' original story line. It was noted that the most important female lead in the books so far is Susannah Dean, an African-American amputee who becomes one of Roland Deschain's allies.

Lee is set to star alongside McConaughey, who is allegedly portraying the villainous Man In Black, and Idris Elba, who will be playing the lead protagonist gunslinger Roland Deschain. The first film in the planned cinematic series will introduce and establish the relationships between the franchise's key characters especially that of Roland Deschain and his young apprentice Jake Chambers. No official confirmation has been made as of the moment regarding the actor playing Jake.

The Dark Toweri will be directed by Nikolaj Arcel with Akiva Goldsman, Stephen King, Ron Howard and Brian Grazer producing. Jeff Pinkner and Anders Thomas Jensen are penning the screenplay together with Arcel and Goldsman.

'The Dark Tower' is an upcoming science-fiction and horror-fantasy film scheduled to be released on January 13, 2017. It is directed by Nikolaj Arcel and is a live-action adaptation of Stephen King's series of fantasy novels of the same name.
