According to Variety, the upcoming sequel to Disney's 1964 musical comedy film is set to feature Blunt in the title role as the iconic fictional nanny. The original film starred Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, an English woman who blows in from the sky and uses magic to take care of the Banks children. The character was based on P.L. Travers' series of books of the same name.
In the original books, Mary Poppins was strict and controlling while in the film she is noticeably kinder and more cheerful. Since her debut on the big screen, she has become one of the most beloved, most critically acclaimed and most iconic Disney characters in the history of the studio. Andrews won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role.
Rob Marshall of 'Memoirs of a Geisha' fame is set to direct the film with John DeLuca and Marc Platt serving as producers. Marshall, DeLuca and Platt worked with Blunt in the musical film 'Into The Woods' and she has been a top choice for Mary Poppins since. David Magee of 'Life of Pi' fame is writing the new screenplay.
According to MovieWeb, the sequel is set in Depression-Era London, two decades following the events of the original film. The plot is based on the book series and will focus on Mary Poppins' continuing adventures with the Banks family. Michael Banks, one of the children from the first film, is reportedly all grown-up with children of his own while his older sister Jane returns to town and has fallen on hard times.
Meanwhile, Blunt is expecting her second child with husband John Krasinski. The news was confirmed late last month. According to the Daily Mail, the Golden Globe-awardee was spotted hiding her baby bump while doing errands or going out with Krasinski. The couple began dating in November 2008 and got married in Italy on July 2010. Blunt gave birth to their first child, Hazel, on February 2014.
