Chinese-American Community Dividedly Supports Former Police Officer Peter Liang: Gets Convicted of Killing Akai Gurley, an Innocent Black Man

By

Though most Chinese-Americans are sympathizing with former police officer Peter Liang, not all of them do. A committee founded in 1980's that supports Anti-Asian movement, Caaav, is supporting the family of Akia Gurley, an innocent citizen "accidentally killed" by Liang.

Caaav is now supporting all colors and thinks justice should be served equally, regardless of race and color. Cathy Dang the executive director of the organization said there are plenty of white officers who are not being arrested even though they have done worst things. Eyewitness News stated that the only African-American member of the jury for Peter Liang's case thinks Liang is blaming himself the most. He said that "If you put your finger on the trigger, you're ready to shoot, now whether you hit someone or, the bullet is going to go somewhere."

New York Times reported that many Chinese-Americans are not happy with the outcome of Peter Liang's trial. Many of them thought Asian Americans, who are also marginalized like the black Americans became a scapegoat as turmoil happens about innocent Black men being killed all around the United States. Liang's case became an example of police officers being convicted into killing a black person. It was evident in the face of the former police officer and the people around him that they were upset about the court's decision.

According to The Atlantic, a jury found Peter Liang guilty of killing Akai Gurley as he shot the unarmed man in the staircase. The decision happened in Brooklyn Supreme Court as they also convicted him of misconduct as he did not help Gurley when he was dying. All in all he was charged with five accounts -assault, reckless endangerment, and criminal negligent homicide.

Many of the Chinese Americans found it super unfair that a Chinese decent or a man with color is the first police officer to be convicted from killing a black man when there are many white police officers who misbehaves and show police brutality. According to most of them, just because they aren't voicing their concerns and are not that represented much unlike other races, they are the ones being targeted.
