Activision Confirms ‘Destiny 2’ Launch in 2017 and Huge Expansion for ‘Destiny’ This Year

By

Activision has just announced it will be releasing a “large expansion” for its first person shooter, “Destiny” this year, with its sequel “Destiny 2” following behind in 2017.

According to the Santa Monica, California-based video game publisher’s investor’s call and earnings report, “Destiny 2,” which was previously delayed, has been placed on the pipeline for a 2017 release, Forbes wrote.

The report also stated that game developer, Bungie is currently developing a “large new expansion” for the current game, which follows 2014’s “Dark Below” and last year’s “The Taken King.”

Bungie also mentioned the sequel will carry over players’ existing characters and progress, and that Activision would be releasing new sequels of the game every other year through 2019, with downloadable expansions to fill in the gap.

While neither Bungie nor Activision specifically detailed the months when the sequel and the new expansion is scheduled for release, Activision did mention an update that’s due this Spring to raise the game’s current level cap, Kotaku reported.

The Spring update is expected to feature a Light increase, new gear and equipment, and additional challenges for players.

Based on its quarterly earnings call it published Feb. 11, Thursday, Activision further announced it has recorded a total of 25 million players having logged over 3 billion playing hours on “Destiny,” IGN mentioned.

Details of the coming expansion, news of the delayed sequel, and additional information on the current game were initially kept under wraps, but were reluctantly revealed after Activision’s shareholders called for an update on “Destiny 2’s” progress.

The original game, which was launched on PlayStation 3 and 4, as well as Xbox One and 360 in September 2014, was met with mixed to positive reviews, but was criticized for its meager storyline and choppy narrative.

However, Activision reported “Destiny” as being its most successful franchise since it’s launched, having sold over $500 million in physical retail copies worldwide, the earnings report revealed.
