Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OTA Update Now Rolling Out To Sony Xperia M5, M5 Dual [How To Install]

By

Sony Xperia C4 and C5 Ultra handsets have received its Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update last month. Now, it is the right time for the Xperia M5 and M5 Dual handsets to obtain the similar firmware update via over-the-air.

According to International Business Times, the software update moves Xperia M5 single-SIM (E5603, E5653, E5606) to build number 30.1.A.1.33 and Xperia M5 Dual (E5633, E5663, E5643) to 30.1.B.1.33. But it is not yet confirmed if the device with number E5643 will be getting the Lollipop update.

Here are the step-by-step procedures on how to install Android 5.1 Lollipop via OTA on Sony Xperia M5 and M5 Dual devices.

After an Android 5.1 Lollipop download notification appears on the screen of the device, users have to tap the "Download" button and press "Restart & Install". The handset will start to reboot automatically and owners of the gadget will see "Installing System Update" notice when the installation starts. The upgrading begins automatically and the Android 5.1 Lollipop will run on the device after upgrading is done.

Just in case handlers of Xperia M5 phones haven't received any notification, they can check the availability of the firmware manually by going to the smartphone's Settings > About Phone >System Updates > Check For Update.

Furthermore, NDTV Gadgets stated on its article the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the Sony Xperia M5 features better memory management together with some enhancements to volume mode control. The Lollipop update also gives user the ability to take pictures from the smartphone using the Sony Smartwatch 3. Additionally, the software update from Sony also brings the latest January security update, stability and performance improvements.

Another highlight in the Lollipop 5.1 is the built-in Device Protection, which makes sure the handset is locked when lost or stolen, until signed-in using a Google account. It also has a definition voice calling on the mobile phone. However, the HD voice calling will be accessible only on compatible Android 5.1 devices. Apart from those, the upgrade also features the ability to join Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth paired device option directly available from Quick Settings.

For reference, Sony Xperia M5 features a 5-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2. It has a 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution and 441 ppi pixel density. This handset weighs 142.5 g and it measures 145 x 72 x 7.6 mm.

Under its chassis, the Xperia M5 is engineered with a Mediatek Helio X10 processor clocking 2.0GHZ, a 3 GB of RAM and a 16 GB internal memory that can be further expanded up to 200 GB via microSD card.

As for the camera, it boasts a 21.5MP Exmore RS camera with f/2.2 and phase detection autofocus and a 13MP front snapper with f/2.0. All of these are powered by a 2600 mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery.

In terms of connectivity, it  has support for Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, hotspot, Bluetooth v4.1, A2DP, LE, apt-X, GPS, NFC, FM radio with RDS, microUSB v2.0.

Although many are expecting Android 6.0 Marshmallow, receiving Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update is still better than getting no update at all.  Nevertheless, this may be a preparation for the latest Android version from Google.
