Microsoft Lumia 950 XL vs. Huawei Mate 8: Specs, Features, Price Comparison

Late fall of 2015, Microsoft has launched the Lumia 950 that has a normal screen size alongside the XL variant which is an upgraded version of the former. Huawei on the other hand, has released its Mate 8 phablet, which runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and has a more luxurious aspect. Though not the pioneer models in the industry, Lumia 950 XL and Mate 8 still give a decent competition  to each other.

Neurogadget made a keen comparison between the Lumia 950 XL and Huawei Mate 8.

With the design aspect, the Microsoft Lumia 950 XL measures 151.9×78.4×8.1mm and weights 165 grams. The device's back portion is made of plastic but has a a metal frame and a large circular rear camera. Instead of sporting a fingerprint scanner for security benefits, the Lumia 950 XL has an iris scanner hidden inside the front camera. On the other hand, the Huawei Mate 8 is made entirely of metal, it's taller but slimmer than the Lumia 950 XL, as it measures 157.1×80.6×7.9mm and weighs 185 grams.

The Lumia 950 XL sports an AMOLED display of 5.7-inch that supports a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels at 518 ppi and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4. Protected with the same glass, Mate 8 comes with an IPS-NEO LCD display of 6-inch, but supports a lower resolution of 1920×1080 pixels at 368 ppi.

The Microsoft's flagship smartphone is engineered with a Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 that has an octa-core processor formed from a quad-core Cortex A57 processor clocked at 2GHz. It also has a quad-core Cortex A53 processor clocked at 1.5GHz working hand-in-hand with Adreno 430 graphics card and 3GB of RAM.

On the contrary, the Mate 8 is engineered with a HiSilicon Kirin 950 chipset, which is powered by an octa-core processor formed from a quad-core Cortex A72 processor and clocked at 2.3GHz, as well as a Cortex A53 processor that is clocked at 1.8GHz. Its chipset is paired by a Mali-T880 MP4 graphics card. When it comes to the RAM capacity, the Mate 8 arrives in two variants of 3 GB and 4 GB.

Camera-wise, Microsoft Lumia 950 XL features a fronts snapper of 5MP and primary camera of 20MP that features triple-LED RGB flash, PureView technology, HDR, panorama and face detections. Meanwhile, the Mate 8 has a weaker primary camera of 16MP armed with a dual-LED flash, autofocus, face detection, HDR, panorama, and geo-tagging. Its secondary camera has a higher resolution of 8MP.

When it comes with the battery, the Lumia 950 XL has a removable Li-Ion battery of 3340 mAh while Mate 8 has a much powerful irremovable battery of 4000 mah.

Ecumenical News added that when it comes to memory slots, the version on the Lumia 950 XL can holdup to 200 GB while the slot on the Mate 8 supports up to 128 GB. As for the price, the unlocked Lumia 950 XL costs $650 , while the unlocked Huawei Mate 8 could cost $643.

Lastly for the connectivity options, SpecOut stated that both Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and Huawei Mate 8 have support for Mobile Hotspot Tethering, 4G connectivity, Bluetooth, NFC, WiFi and 3G.

Based on the comparison, both Microsoft Lumia 950 XL and Huawei Mate have its own edge among the other. Nevertheless, it is still for the users to decide which device will fit their needs.
