Dozen Black Women’s Groups assembled to ask U.S. Supreme Court regarding Texas Abortion Law

12 groups involving black women organizations have congregated to challenge the Texas pro-life law in the highest courts, the U.S. Supreme Court. Moreover, Obama administration also provided aid to the cause of organizations.

Black women's reproductive justice organizations have filed a petition to the U.S. Supreme court to overturn the Texas pro-life law. According to Michronicleonline, under the name In Our Own Voice: National Black Women's Reproductive Justice Agenda, 12 organizations filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court titled Whole Woman's Health, et al., v. Kirk Cole, Commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services, et al. The case filed is focused on the devastating acts of the law among black women in Texas as there have been a lot of abortion clinic closures due to the implementation.

Executive director of the summed organization, Marcela Howell, stated that politicians who are passing these kinds of law do not care about the health and well being of women adding that they're only interested in stopping abortion. The organization hopes that the Supreme Court will keep their right to having reproductive health services access specially, abortion care.

The amicus brief filed entitles to the devastating impact of the law to women. As reported by Life News, the group claims that the reproductive health care of more than 725,000 reproductive-aged black women in Texas has been jeopardized by the law. November 2015 when Supreme Court agreed to hear the health care case and it detailed the legislation, House Bill 2, that requires abortion facilities to meet all safety standards practiced in other Ambulatory Surgical Center. However, due to this, as claimed by the women's groups, there has been increase in travel time and waiting for Texas women seeking abortions since the law closed many abortion clinics.

Moreover, Obama administration also helped the case to battle the fight. In reports of The Village Sun Times, the Obama administration asked the Supreme Court to strike down the law in the case scheduled to be heard in March 2 but there's no more to detail. Also, they claimed that medical organizations such as American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Medical Association, and the American Public Health Association also discussed that the stated law is medically unnecessary and would cause endangerment to women.

The Our Own Voice: National Black Women's Reproductive Justice Agenda is an ensemble of 12 black women organizations detailing that the U.S. Supreme Court should overturn the Texas pro-life law. The law as stated by the group is producing devastating outcomes to black women in Texas as they filed their amicus brief. Moreover, the Obama administration provided aid to the cause of these organizations. The case is now before the U.S. Supreme Court.
