'X-Men: Apocalypse' dropped its newest trailer featuring new and returning cast members as popular X-Men characters, with Oscar Isaac's supervillain Apocalypse as the film's newest antagonist. A Hindu leader took offence at Apocalypse's Krishna reference and demanded the removal of the name from the trailer as well as the entire film.
According to the Waltonian, 20th Century Fox recently revealed the official trailer for the upcoming X-Men film featuring a whole new cast including Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Olivia Munn as Psylocke, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Lana Condor as Jubilee and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler.
Familiar faces also graced the new trailer including Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert and James McAvoy as Professor X.
The highlight for the teaser, though, is the Oscar Isaac's En Sabah Nur a.k.a. Apocalypse. Audiences are finally able to grasp the immense threat of the first and most powerful ancient mutant who returns to destroy all of humanity as well as other mutants. According to What Culture, Isaac revealed that his character was created as a blend of something from the 80s and something new.
He admitted that he was a massive fan of Apocalypse and the supervillain's many versions throughout the comic books. He hinted, "There's X-Factor, there's X-Men, there's The Age of Apocalypse, there's the animated series, there's X-Men: Evolution, so when someone says Apocalypse without referring a comic book, it's a very general question. They may want to state which is their Apocalypse first. He's definitely not going to be everyone's favourite version of Apocalypse, but he's my favourite version of Apocalypse."
In the trailer, Apocalypse is seen referencing himself as several religious figures as to which one particular religious leader took offence. The villain was heard saying, "I have been called many things over many lifetimes -- Ra, Krishna, Yahweh."
According to Hindustantimes.com, Hindu leader Rajan Zed reacted quite frankly saying, "Such trivialisation of Lord Krishna, who is highly revered in Hinduism, is quite inappropriate and disturbing to the devotees."
Zed issued a statement calling for the retraction of Krishna's name from the film. An excerpt from the statement read, "...Lord Krishna was meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines, not for pushing movies for the mercantile greed of filmmakers." He asked for director Bryan Singer to erase all references of their Hindu diety both from the trailers and from the final film saying that inappropriate usage of religious figures for commercial purposes will "hurt the devotees and confuse non-Hindus about Hinduism."
'X-Men: Apocalypse' is an upcoming superhero film based on the characters of Marvel's popular comic book characters and is intended as the ninth installment in the live-action series. It is scheduled to be released on May 27, 2016 and is directed by Bryan Singer based on the screenplay by Simon Kinberg.
